Bill Plympton's global guard dog jam!

Hey everybody,

You've seen the film, Guard Dog, by Bill Plympton, right? Well, a couple of months ago, he decided to do a remake of that film with a unique twist. He invited artists all around the world to reinterpret each shot and combine them for a Guard Dog Global Jam type of film. You can check out all the other wonderful artists' shots here:

It's all done in with solids and masks in After Effects, here's an early version of it with just the solids.

The pupils in the eyes are huge because I had to compensate for the various effects I had around it that "ate" away at the clean outline to give it a more painterly feel.

Here's the original painting that I did on canvas for the look of my shot.

I ended up using it as a basis for the textures and background in After Effects. I wanted to try and keep the original painting look, even though it was going to be done in After Effects. In alot of ways it's similar to the tests I did a while back on this blog with full animation done first on paper:

Since the animation, in this case, was a lot less complicated than that though, I just decided to do the animation completely in After Effects without doing a pencil test first.

Anyways, it was a lot of fun to work on, and it was very cool seeing all the various styles and mediums people chose to do their shots in. Hand drawn animation, computer animation, cut out, stop motion, you name it, it's in there. We even had a 10 year old working on a shot! It's cool too that it's a remake so you know the story, and you can have fun looking at all the various interpretations the artists came up with.

Hey, still alive, and kicking. I see the asian part of the world is really taking a liking to this blog. Been doing alot of thinking about being an artist lately and life in general, but instead of boring you with stuff like that, here's my first real attempt at drawing on a tablet. I figure I need to learn how to not draw like a 5 year old on it so here you go:

Greatest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle ever! I've always wonder this, any real readers that read this blog. Like I was a little kid when this show came on, but for teenagers who watched this show, did the fact that the turtles where teenagers help you to identify with them? As a kid, beyond the name, I always looked at them as adult turtles fighting crime. Like I didn't attach any significants of the term teenager in the name.

And Asian spammers......GO!

Here's a little animation I've been working on during my free time. I got a lot of fixes to do on this, but I figured I'd post something since other stuff I've been working on I can't. Plus checking my email, I see I've got two more comments on the last post from spammers using Asian letters. They have been pretty aggressive, I've got 14 comments on that post! Wouldn't it be more effective to spam blogs that have regularly update posts with many viewers? Apparently it's better to spam blogs with no readers and relatively few new posts. Or maybe they are spamming me to encourage me to update my blog, as goodwill or a community service act to balance all the evil stuff they do with spamming. Who knows.

Oh my god, It's been three years! I can't figure out what day in October it was, so I'll go with today. The end of an Era

I know, I know, hold back those tears, my friends. We all know it would come to an end eventually. Just like rising prices in the housing and stock market, it had to end, right? The Wonder Pets series is over. (Well, technically, Nickelodeon could call at anytime and ask for another season, but they are kind of pushing it, what with everybody layed off right now.) Maybe later I'll write about the experience of my first job working on a animated television show from my perspective but I have to collect my thoughts on that. But here is a caricature of the Creative Director who was intrumental in designing the look of the show, Jennifer Oxley.

I'd like to include horror stories of her but in truth, I only met her briefly once and she seemed like a very cool person, so I am sorry.

And I found this while trying to put together my portfolio and copying old files, not sure why or when I did this, seeing as how Pluto is my favorite character, but I did.

Now that I have a little free time on my hands(read:unemployed), I've been reading alot. Books, you say? No although I do have time to finish reading "A thousand Splendid Suns" and a few other books that have nothing in common with one another except that they have all been halfway read by me. But I digress. I've been reading on what people think the next economic model is for online media. Seems like everybody's saying you should give your content away for free. Sounds crazy at first, actually, it still sounds crazy, so I got to do more research. But I guess the reasoning is that in the internet age, content can be reproduced infinity and the millionth copy is no less perfect than the original. That single fact drives the price of content to zero. Traditional media like books and dvds make money because there is only a limited number of them. Thus the price is dependent of the cost of the actual physical media on which the content resides. So you give away your content for free because it is infinite and get people to buy real items like t-shirts, autographs and other exclusive stuff.

The only downside I see (And I admittedly have to do some more research on the subject so I can fully grasp what these people are proposing) is now your profits aren't tied to the main product, it's tied to the secondary products you sell. Which means it's possible for more people to own your content than buy material goods from you. That wasn't possible in the old model since the material goods you sold contained the content, excluding piracy. Also while once the content is made it become infinite, making the content is a finite process, and cost money, which can only be recouped by the secondary products since you give the content away for free. Anyways these people know a hell of a lot more than me, so listen to them.

Just some quick star animation for the end of a drive in commercial I did for one of my old Professors, Steve Stanchfield. I tied it down since it's going to be put onto cels, (Who uses those anymore?) and I don't know who's cleaning it up (I'd like to get the color version if it's good enough). That is all, now sit back, relax and enjoy. But sit back and relax first and then push play. Otherwise while your sitting back, it will already be over. It's kind of short.

I did use Toon Boom professionally to color something once a while back for a short I helped out on, by Glen Parsons, called "The Chicken". The sweet thing about the coloring process is if you change, say the color of the tie from red to blue, it will change on every drawing that uses the original red. Pretty sweet, eh? So here is something I started like one day a year ago to learn the program and just decided to finish it today. I'd like to say I brought some skills I learned over the months to add to it, but it's really hard to show improvement with a mouse. That and I don't really know or have the desire to learn how to use the onion skinning feature right now. So yeah, an entire year goes by and I still don't know how to use Toon Boom. But I like saying I own it, and the Simpsons use it for production, and it has an automatic lip sync feature. It has a nice ring to it. So without further ado, here it is Man walking dog. !

There. So the ticket lady you'll be able to click on her. She'll be in that empty space on the left side of the website that you were wondering why there's no clickables there. Cut to new page much closer, she falls asleep. In comes sinister guy and presents you with bootleg copies of reels. I'll probably have mock dvds for the demo reel files instead of Quicktime and Window Media Player logos in the thumbnail. Why the hell did I draw a Windows Media Player logo. Nobody uses Window Media files. So yeah, still got to figure out the action script for all this. That's what's been the hold up.

So I was checking my Yahoo email and I noticed the My photos button at the bottom left side. Wondering what the hell was in it, I clicked on it. Apparently every image you emailed or recieved comes up. So I found this one image that I don't really remember drawing, must of been for somebody or something. Looks like a prelimenary rough sketch for a project that didn't go anywhere. So yeah, can't really give a backstory to this one. But at least it will serve to take up space until the next post (Still working on the website.) So here it is.

AND OH MY GOD I DON'T EVEN HAVE TO MAKE A TITLE, though now it feels like a book missing its cover. Oh well.

Since this was a simple head turn, I decided not to waste time animating it traditionally first. I just took the 2 keys into after effects and with masks, inbetweened it there. Thus I don't have a pencil test for this one like the guy with pop and popcorn.

Hopefully you people reading this, are thinking this is awesome Jodie's posting so much and by the end of this realize that I could have waited and summed all this up with one post of the finished animation for my website

First animation is the rough pencil test.

Second is cleaned up keys with timing charts.

Third is the computer strutting it's stuff.

Last is a slow version of what the computer did in green. *Note* the computer did not inbetween the 3d rotation of the hand. All I will say about how it is inbetweened though, is that the computer did not inbetween it....

Anyways, a lot of people will see this as leaving traditional animator without jobs. Nonsense. There will be plenty of traditional animators in the future. They will be the traditional animators composed of metallic parts though...

New drawings, actually just some thumbnails from Wonderpets and a caricature cause it seems the ol' blog is getting a little dusty (and some newbies are posting more than me!) and I don't have any real drawings on hand so I scavenged stuff off my desk. Here is a caricature of one of Michigan's own state senators, Gilda Jacobs.

And here is are some thumbnails from Wonder Pets, since they haven't aired yet, You get the chance to to check back at the blog every time a new episode airs, check if it is from that episode and compare the actual animation the thumbnails. Lucky You!!!

Now some person is going to think they're smart. They'll think, "Hey, Jodie's posting these thumbnails and animation comparison on the day after Cartoon Brew posted that most of the animation in television requires so little unique animation, it should be automated by a computer. And one show he sights is Wonder Pets. Well, you are kind of right. While I have a problem with what he said about Wonder Pets, I have more of a problem about the factual inaccuracies of the entire article more than anything else.

Now Amid makes hugely incorrect statements and comes to some questionable conclusions. First, why he has come to his conclusion about the state of the television animation based on a program called Xtranormal is beyond me. The program he says can replace animators looks so unsophisticated that I have vague memories of a Super Nes game that gives you the equivalent amount of freedom. Secondly, as an animator on the Wonder Pets, I can say that the show isn't made up entirely of preapproved animations, where only a select few of the animators make original animation, and I'll assume that goes for Little Einsteins and the other shows he bashes. South Park is not already automated as far as I know. Animators work crazy hours to make the show possible in that amount of time (Now whether that in itself is good and the process should be automated like the other shows he mentions is up for debate but he states that it already is automated). Super Jail is sighted as a show that need artists. It is a good show but does he use it as an example because the animation is so integral that is couldn't be done automated as the other shows he mentions or is it that every frame has to be hand drawn, and that in and of itself qualifies it as creative animation. The quotes he uses are alsp taken out of context. Thankfully he links to the sources so you can see they are misquotes. Jim Worthy, a bg designer on "Fairy Odd Parents" says in an interview that “After 7 seasons, I’m amazed how many times I still need to design Timmy’s bedroom" but then elaborates why that is but this part is not quoted. Amid also quotes a post on Fran Krause's blog says “New Website Makes Animators Obsolete.” While not directly saying Fran believes this, he doesn't say that he doesn't, which is apparent if you visit his blog. And how could you misinterpret Pat Smith's, a renowned traditional Animator, sarcastic remakes about Xtranormal.

Wow that's kind of long, but that is one of my pet peeves. Some statements are of the right or wrong, partially right and partially wrong, depends on the context of the situation type, based on your ideological viewpoint kind which make life kind of hard. And then there are those pesky little things called facts, which are either completely true or completely false from every viewpoint. Everyone has a responsibility when talking to someone else to give at the bare minimum, factual information that's in context. You have the potential to change some one's viewpoint and you don't want to give them false premises to come to your conclusion even if your conclusion is correct. It's called journalistic integrity, which I don't see alot of thesde days.

And that's really the tragedy of all this. Because if you disregard all incorrect information (which arguably makes up the bulk of the article), the point he is trying to make is valid about the amount of creative talent put into television in general vs the actual talent of the artists on the shows.

I've actually been thinking about this alot lately myself. Although, I will say that Amid is specifically talking about animation that is so bland and unspecific, in his opinion, it might as well be done by a computer, whether or not, someone uses stock libraries to animate it or creates it from scratch. That is a tight rope to walk on in regards to what warrants being animated as opposed to not. Sure, there are broad strokes you could paint but, like all art, when you start getting in to specific areas, you move from generally accepted opinions to your own personal opinions. (Sure, most people think Disney's hand drawn films are of high quality artistry (in terms of animation), but are they the only films of high quality art or even the best showcases of quality art?)

However, I do think that the animator could be given more opportunities to create quality animation, which is why I am more interested in areas where alot of time is spent on things that are not creative in nature but are still challenging, and or tedious to do, and have to be done one way or another. Basic television A-F lip sync(I know, Toon Boom has it. Hint, hint, Flash and After Effects, you major television production tools, hint, hint.), in regards to hand drawn animation some forms of inbetweening, and in my opinion, alot of forms of overlapping actions, etc. Alot of this could be done by the computer and probably will be one day. That doesn't mean animators will be out of jobs. The more an animator has to do on an animated television show, especially when it comes to tedious tasks that require time and energy($$$) but nothing creative, the less valuable each animator becomes, and the more inclined a studio is to send things overseas.

Sure, people will say, "If you want to create quality stuff, do it outside of work." That is all good, yes, do that. Yet, that's not justification for offering excuses on why the industry has to be this way, and not discussing the state of the industry and how it could be a more creative environment. Nothing's set in stone. So whether you think the current system works just fine or is creatively bankrupt(though you probably will be better off considering another career), I think we can all agree that even the best systems can be improved. Who knows, maybe we can even collectively fix a couple of things.

Didn't finish for the 11 second club. I waited too long to start animated like the beginning in 2 days and then got the bright idea I could finish the last 7 seconds in 6 hours before it was due(silly me). I plan on and roughly animating the last 7 seconds properly and finishing this piece though.

Cause I got nothing new of my own that I can show off, here's a website I found with a load of stuff from Iron Giant.

I took some of the drawings down and assemble them into a pencil test. This one was apparently drawn by Brad Bird. I know he did the the coffee scene, but I'm not sure what other scenes he specifically did. Who ever did it, even for a very sporadic scenes, it's very solidly drawn. It's got timing charts on it which is always cool to see. I am not sure it was inbetweened. This are just the keys but it seems to work just fine for spinning thru the air in a car.

And this other one was already a pencil test. It was shot all on 3s so I went through according to the numbers and deleted a some frames to get the proper timing on. There were a couple of frames missing but nothing major. Actually it was a blessing it was shot on 3s since it also had frame blending issues on a lot of frames, which meant there were extra frames of each drawing that were frame blended that could be deleted. I also wish it would have been shot with peg bars to keep the registation consistant but that's just nit picking and he may have wanted to keep the peg holes intact.

I know this bloggy thing is collecting a little rust from inactivity. I've been pretty busy with my day job on Wonderpets and my side job working on a 2d game for the iphone(ya for 2d!!!), but here is a test from a comercial I worked on a few months ago. I think it's pretty cool for a quick test, the only thing that bugs me is the right arm, when he reaches the top it switches to twos, and I didn't take that into acount with the spacing so the arm on the drawing before it grabs the candy bar freezes a bit, but I didn't have time to shoot it more than once(a thing of the past now that I have my own pencil test set up at home!) Anyways, here it is

If you haven't bought the johan frnazen t-shirt(tshirtpimpz.com), and were thinking "You know, I just want to see it blown up a little bit with a bunch of signatures on it on tv, preferable channel 4 first, and then I will decide to buy it."

Well, today is your lucky day(or technically, May 17, 2008, game 5 on the Red Wings road to victory.) I've hit it big time(in the city of Detroit at least)My drawing of Johan Franzen appeared on channel 4 as a get well soon card. Oh yeah!!! And I hope he gets to play in the Stanley cup finals and more importantly I hope the concussion like symptons aren't that serious and don't effect him later down the road.

Yeah, I post some more of that episode of Wonderpets in a little bit, but since we have a 2 month hiatus on wonderpets, decided to step away from the keyboard for a bit and do some freelance illustration. This is for the same guy who owns a t-shirt company that I did the Britney t-shirt design for (www.tshirtpimpz.com)Although it's been a few months since then, due to my lack of blogging, all you have do is scroll down slightly to see it. It's of the Red Wings player Johan "the Mule" Franzen. Hopefully the Redwings go all the way so more T-shirts will be sold. Obviously, this isn't sanctioned by the Red Wings, hence Det(Detroit) and not Redwings and no symbol of th winged Tire. Tried to get the "Det" to be believibly wrapping with the cloth and yet still be simplified enough where you could read it. Been looking at some cloth notes lately that I got off of Seven Camels blog awhile back trying to really get the handle on the way clothes wrap aroung the character and yet still retain the structure underneath. Not as easy as it sounds.(Other great stuff on that website too! Check it out on my links.)

Well scanning takes time, so until scanning takes a microsecond to do(including cropping, levels, and other steps to get the final jpeg), or I get a better internet connection, there probably will not be a artwork extravaganza on this blog any time soon. Plus I have a job (TV production doesn't sleep) and lets not foget, the most important factor, laziness.

You're probably thinking you should stop reading since this probably means there is no new artwork., but look, here is some new artwork I scanned just for you. Well, technically I had to scan this for a client today, but lets imagine I did to make this experience that much more satisfying.

This is for a small freelance job doing some t-shirt designs. The client wants a play on words of Briney Spears and Pop tarts. I think Fox News calls the troubled celeberity teens of America, Pop tarts. I had never heard this until the client said he wanted Britney as a poptart, and I did a little research on the old web. I guess I am not up on the hip young lingo of these jive young whippersnappers of the next generation. I guess it make sense, Pop star, Pop tart. Oh well, I don't watch Fox News, I don't watch much TV, and when I do, it's like the History or the Discovery Channel, or the George Lopez show on Nick at Night, that show is hilarious. He’s back!!! I have some drawings to post. But that takes scanning and organizing and stuff, so that will be up in a little bit. The website has some new illustration work and an updated reel. It's getting an update in the next couple of days with flash video instead of quicktime and windows so enjoy the downloadable content while you can. But anyways, here is some new animation!!!

It’s a commercial I worked on with my old Professor, Steve Stanchfield, and fellow colleagues, Ayaka Kakaiuchi and Kyle Hood. I did a little animation and coloring on a few other shot, but the main shot I did was Vito handing the pizza off to the Mom (Though, I didn’t animate or color the kids in the shot.). Why is there a black screen in the middle? Well that actually has an alpha channel so there will be video of pizza with cheese stretching off it and such. So any one from Ohio, go and by a Vito’s Pizza today! Tell them Tony Packos sent you!

Oh and for my viewers, ages 3 to 7, next week I’ll start my new job animating on the Nick show, Wonder Pets.(Though I won’t be able to post that stuff, at the very least until the episode airs, so I guess that won’t effect this blog much in the near future. Though I am working on a few ideas for my own short, so stay tuned.)

I think I might try coloring this catfish drawing with my new tablet to get some practice with it.

While a lot of Autobots can boast of such admiral achievements like saving Earth and defeating Megatron and the Decepticons on the battlefield, sooner or later, one has to realize that the rust-less, youthful life of a robot warrior is doomed to come to an end. Sadly, most Transformers don’t make this connection, and consequently don’t plan their lives past 300,000 miles (I saw Optimus Prime on the street the other day, trying to sell used car parts, brought a tear to my eyes.)

Not the Autobot named Nine-Iron! Golf was his answer from Cybertron. Practicing his swing on unlucky Decepticons, Nine-Iron is a force to be reckoned with in and outside the PGA tour. Look out, Tiger Woods!

And one more thing. Normally we at Jodimation Industries hold a very high standard for work posted on this blog so, consequently we don't show youtube videos outside of our own work. But every once in a while, something comes along that should be ingrained in the memory of every living individual. Here is one of those times.

Carica-Zoo-cowboys drawings

I bet you are wondering what the Title means. Well it is a combination word for all the drawings you are about to see, commonly referred to as a compound word like fireman or .....nonfireman...anyways, here are some zoo drawings I did last week. I've decided to start doing this more frequently so I bought a year pass for the family for 70 bucks, sure beats the 20 bucks for just one trip to the Zoo (I haven't been to the zoo, I think, since I was just a wee little lad learning the mysteries of the multiplication table.)

And here is some practice drawings for a possible Caricature job at the Zoo.\ The first three are of some friends. I put a photo next to the drawing for comparison. I got to find a photo of the last guy, though.

And this one I did while watching TV is......Well, if you can't tell, then I guess I haven't done my job. I'll be posting a lot more caricatures in a little bit.

Please note that this image does not mean I support or don't support Hilary Clinton it is just the best background I could think of . The only political candidate on record I will support, is me. As we speak (or as I type and you squint to read the words on your bright computer moniter) my campaign committee lawyers are working on a loop hole in the 35 year old age limit so I can run. Surely if a 12 year old girl can play in a mature adult golf tornament, then it must be unconstitutional to deny an adult, based upon age, for presidential candidacy.

Doing an poster for freelance. It supposed to look like a movie poster, but it is for classroom settings. These are just some of the rough thumbnails. For reference, I looked at movie posters, alot of Clint Eastwood stuff, Scareface, etc.

On the bottom left of the first page, you have from left to right- Oppenheimer, Lawrence, Groves, Fermi, and Teller.

Too bad this is just an imitation of a movie poster. From doing some research, it sounds like it could be a good movie (unless it already is, in which case you could probably watch the movie instead of reading the rest of this). You got interesting characters, all of who have differing opinions of the ethics of whether it should be used, an issue which has good arguments on both sides. I think one of the most interesting scientist of the Mahattan group was Edward Teller, the father of the hydrogen bomb. Even when working on the Mahattan Project, he is already thinking 7 years ahead to the creation of the H-BOMB, a weapon much more devastating than the Atom Bomb, and later plays a part in the trial that ultimately gets the respected lead scientist, Oppenheimer's security clearence to the nuclear program revoked. Oppenheimer had previously opposed the developement of the Hydrogen bomb. A fellow scientist, said of Teller "I really do feel it would have been a better world without Teller....I think he's an enemy of humanity." Wow, those are harsh words! With Oppenheimer holding a more 20th century notion that with man's increased control over the natural world, there might in turn be certain moral responsibilities that scientists have, and Teller holding a more traditional approach that a scientist sole responisibility is to expand man's knowledge, I could see some great character moments between those two. And all this against the backdrop of World War II times. Sounds like a good drama to me.

Every heard of a magical town called Kalamazoo? Well, gather round the campfire or er..computer moniter, kids. It is the place where the only animation festival in Michigan takes place every 2 years. The Kalamazoo Animation Festival International. KAFI. I know it should be International Festival, but then it would be KAIF which doesn't sound as good. Anyways I got to participate in the Cartoon Challenge, a contest with 10 teams from across the country compete to make a 30 second Public Service Announcement in 3 and a half days. The topic was Global Warming. Although our team didn't win, I got to meet tons of cool people and got to animate a tornado, which foreshadowed a real tornado that hit Kalamazoo. Good times. Since I don't know the legal issues with posting the finished video before it appears on the KAFI website, I'll wait to post that video. But just to satisfy your taste, here's some other stuff I've done in the last month

Here is a title sequence I did real quick for a guy for his Senior project.

And my first flash test down like two weeks ago, for a possible job that has to be done in Flash. Took me about 4 days to do, but I think I am getting the hang of flash. I know what your thinking, "He's just now learning Flash?" Yes, better late than never.

Jodie now has a website!!!!............. Let's cut the friendly chatter. What's that mean to you? Because in the end it's about what you get out of it, right. Well for future employers, you don't have to look throughout this entire crap of a blog looking for my demo reel. And for the 2.5 viewers actually reading this blog, you don't have to put up with new post containing only minute changes to my demo reel. Looks like everybody's a winner here! And since everyone knows that the satifaction of knowing you're a winner doesn't get you very far in this life, here is your prize.

After fixing some areas and inbetweening it some more it's still alittle rubbery on the barrel part but I think it's good to go for now, just need to finish the second half.

Here is the latest version of an animation I am working on. I started it like 2 years ago, and finally decided to finish it up. It is about a man who loses everything and consequently finds out what's truly important to him. Now I am not saying this film answers all of life's questions but in so much as it tries to, it answers a substantial majority of them.

It still needs a few inbetweens and the timing on when he takes his last 2 steps while wiping his head doesn't display the weight like the other steps but it's almost done.

I'm not dead, I'm still here. I post some new work up a little later, but I think you'll enjoy this much more than my own attempts at animation. Here's some pencil test from some xeroxed drawings that my professor Steve Stanchfield let me see. The first is a Frank Thomas pencil test.

The second is a Bill Tyla pencil test, only a second and a half, but so much amazing stuff going on!(sorry,I got to find a better way to upload this clip, it looks terrible, you miss all the nuances and such, and this was my favorite clip.)

The third one is by Milt Kahl. I apologize if it is a little jittery, the peg holes didn't xerox clear enough like on the other two and it couldn't be aligned be the edges of paper to my dismay, so I had to shot them by sight.

These are the figure drawings I did tonight (technically yesterday), at least the ones that looked halfway decent enough to post. I decided to start visiting my old anatomy class. I gotta start figure drawing again. I getting rusty at it,(Perhaps I need a better word as rusty means you were good at it at one time, let's just say I need lots of practice.) So I'll use this blog to force me to do some figure drawing and get me in the habit of scanning in stuff. I don't draw in sketchbooks, I usually have a stack of copy paper on me. Drawing in a sketchbook makes me feel like I have to make a beautiful drawing every page, you know.The advantage of copy paper for me is that I can easily throw away it without a second thought. It's like doing rough animation. But the disadvantage is I have tons of pages of random drawings, and when it comes to scanning drawings in, I have look through tons of papers.(some folded, wrinkled or just lost somewhere)

The top three are pencil and the bottom 2 are marker. I like the bottom right one the best. My friend told me to try and caricature the model. At first I was like, you know maybe I should get back in the grove of drawing the figure properly before doing that, but after drawing him like 5 or 6 times in the same pose, (It's an illustration studio class so besides a few gestures, that was the pose for the class.) and limited space to walk around, I got bored and went for it. It's going to be a little bit before I post the rest of that dialog pencil test since my efforts have been towards 'stupid' 3d rigging this week. Maybe I'll post some pics of my 3d character tomorrow(or technically today). Yeah...Time to get some sleep.

Here is a 2 year old animation that I am finally finishing cleaning up for my demo reel. Well, more for myself, as I have already two shots from it on my demo reel already and the whole thing will be around 30, 40 seconds tops when finished. It's like so close to done, it would be a shame if I didn't finish it. While I mostly like the cloth animation, I wish I had planned the cloth animation out with the body animation, instead of adding it on afterwards, it's a little to busy, and distracting from what the purpose of the story. The feet are pretty static too for all of his moves. Oh well, you live and learn. This is about a third of it. The premise is about a man who loses everything only to gain that which he truly loved, a touching story indeed. Oh, and he is talking to a firefighter who will be to the left who I still have to animate, who informs him of the status of his family. Enjoy

And while I'm posting videos, and nobody has been coming to this blog yet, let alone film industry film people, I might as well put this now instead of later if ever I want to move over to live action.

I need a more fitting photo for my profile

And since this is a new blog, it's only fitting to show some baby animal pencil tests. The first is an flash back animation I did for a friend of mine Victoria for a short she did. She's a real good stop motion animator and puppet maker although sometimes I don't think she knows that. Just resently she was offered a job from Laika for their next film. I don't know if she is going to take it or not, with her still being in school, but I know what ever she does, she's gonna do big things.

here's some of the concept work I did for the character design. In the end it, we went with the more simplier design, which fit since it was of the penguin remembering his past. Not to mention it saved alot of cleanup time since in retrospect, the time that I spent on it, I really should have been doing other things. But I am glad I worked on the film.

And here's my first time inbetweening pencil test that I did this week. My professor Steve Stanchfield has a friend who is making a short film and need a few more shots inbetweened. So Steve's inbetweening some and handed some shots out to a few students. It's a little different follow someone elses keys that are not your own. You can't make any changes to your keys, or shot stuff on ones, which I usually do with my keys. However I guess as I get better, I wouldn't have to do that as much, especially if someone else is inbetweening my shot. Anyways, his drawings were solidly constructed, and timing charts were good, so there was really no need to. Of course, there were a couple of times I wanted to. On the first turn I wanted to get the nose to drag but since there was a key in the middle, so I could only do it a little. I was able to get the nose to stretch on the nose when he goes to stand on one knee, though. So here is the pencil test.

And it can do video too.. oh how blogs grow up so fast.

Rough pencil test from my Senior Studio Project, the video seems to be poor quality. But at least for tonight I figured out how to upload. Baby steps.

...Oh and before anybody gets any ideas, the thief is putting on sun tan lotion so he won't get sun burn from the hero of the film who shoots out light powers, if he drops in to stop the purse snatching. That's why he also has sunglasses on.

Probably should be working on rigging my 3d character right now but I like to think that every new blog gives some poor kid somewhere more practice with reading, so I am doing my part to fight the evils of illiteracy. So anyways I have started this blog so that I'll have a reason to scan in my work, and also so I can keep track of the wealth of super talented artist blogs I always frequent for inspiration and teaching, cause it's getting hard to remember the website names. Hey, why don't they have comic sans as a font to type in?
